While Shopping Tonight, I Was Asked…

I ran out to Target tonight for paper to wrap a package I want to mail.

While shopping, a mom and her two elementary age children were milling around where I was looking at not wrapping paper…but a container to use in my sewing cabin.  The mom was tired of her little ones fussing with each other…too old to be in a shopping cart…she was trying to engage them with the thought that you never know when Santa Claus or his helpers might be watching how you’re behaving.

I was minding my own business when the mom stopped in the main aisle and looked down the row I was shopping and asked me, “Are you an Elf?”

A bit stunned, because these folks were complete strangers to me, I said the first thing that came to mind, which was, “I could be.”

To which the mom verified and agreed with, “Yes, she could be. You never know.  She’s shorter than me.  I think she could be an elf.  She probably is.”

Now the two little girls were looking me over from head to toe with a curious look.

In wonderment, yet again, I was shaking my head, because, for the life of me, I can’t seem to figure out how I get involved in these kinds of dramas when I am doing everything I can to NOT add any drama to my life.

The two girls ran down a the house ware aisle giving a tit-for-a-tat with each other.  When the mom said, “I can’t believe you two are still going at it when you know there is an elf standing right here,” while pointing at me.

The little girls froze in their tracks, and came back to take one more look to see if I was for real.  Looking at the two little girls I said,  “I think it would be good for you to work with your mom.”

And the mom said, “See!  You never know who is watching what you’re doing!  She reports to the Big Man”

And with that the young family was on their way, the merry chatter fading away as they moved on to another part of the store.

It was a totally unexpected moment, and in its own way, I found it joyful…to be asked, “Are you an elf?”

Hope you’re having a good day!
